Queensland Launches $6.8M Workforce Fund for Skilled Migrants

The Queensland Government has announced a major $6.84 million emergency funding package designed to tackle severe labour shortages across the state, opening new pathways for job seekers . The comprehensive workforce fund will drive industry-led partnerships to alleviate the ongoing crisis in critical sectors while introducing new employment initiatives and concessions for skilled migrants.

Over 7,200 New Job Opportunities

Delivered by the Crisafulli LNP government, the funding will secure new employment and skills development for more than 7,200 individuals. The $6.84 million injection has been allocated across nine major projects focusing on high-priority industries, including construction, healthcare, manufacturing, community services, and tourism.

Minister for Finance and Worker Training, Ros Bates, confirmed that the industry-partnered initiatives are expected to assist approximately 2,000 employers in finding the essential staff required to maintain their operations and overcome the current labour deficit.

Support for Skilled Migrants and Women

A significant highlight for the expatriate community is the Global Talent initiative, implemented by Manufacturing Skills Queensland. This project provides direct assistance to skilled migrants and refugees who have arrived in Australia with overseas qualifications, helping them secure careers in the manufacturing and construction sectors that align with their expertise.

In addition, the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) is rolling out an interpreter development programme within mental health services, presenting a valuable opportunity for bilingual migrants. To address the gender imbalance in trades, the package also includes a dedicated ‘Scaffolding the Future’ programme aimed at attracting and retaining more women in the construction sector.

Regional Tourism Boost and Relocation Vouchers

To combat the scarcity of temporary and seasonal workers in the tourism industry, a new digital platform will be launched under the fund. This system will facilitate the sharing of staff between major regional hubs, including the Whitsundays, Far North Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast.

For workers willing to transition to these regional areas, the government is offering targeted relocation allowances and travel vouchers. This initiative presents a golden opportunity for international students and professionals—including those within the Malayali community—who are seeking employment to fulfil their regional visa requirements.
