Australian Prime Minister Joins Eid Celebrations; Delivers a Message of Religious Harmony

Sydney: Marking the end of Ramadan fasting, Australians are celebrating Eid al-Fitr today. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese personally attended the Eid prayers held today at Australia’s largest mosque, the Lakemba Mosque in Sydney. He extended his best wishes for Eid to the Islamic community across the country.

Joining With the People

Arriving at the mosque in the morning, the Prime Minister received a very warm welcome. He took the time to sit on the floor alongside the public like an everyday person, having a chat and exchanging pleasantries. He actively took part in the Eid celebrations by shaking hands with the faithful and happily snapping selfies with the kids. The Prime Minister has shared pictures of this visit on his official social media accounts.

Solidarity Amidst Threats

The Prime Minister’s visit holds significant social importance in the current climate. Last February (2026), three anonymous letters were received threatening to unleash violence against the Lakemba Mosque and the Muslim community. At the time, the Prime Minister described the incident as “outrageous.” This visit, coming on the heels of those threats, strongly underlines that hate campaigns have no place in Australia.

The Australian Model of Multiculturalism

This isn’t the first time Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has personally taken part in Eid celebrations. Every year since 2022, he has spent time with the Muslim community on the day of Eid. According to the 2021 census figures, the Muslim community makes up approximately 3.2 per cent of the Australian population.

This stance by the government provides a great deal of confidence to all migrant groups, including the Malayali community in Australia. Through this, Anthony Albanese is sending a powerful message that he is committed to safeguarding Australia’s multiculturalism—a place where everyone can live equally, regardless of differences in religion, caste, or nationality.
