Tata Trusts, one of India’s oldest philanthropic organisations, holds 66% in Tata Sons, the holding company that oversees over 30 major firms including Tata Steel, Air India, and Jaguar Land Rover.

Mehli Mistry’s Letter: “Quietus on Speculative News”

In his letter, Mistry addressed recent reports claiming he would challenge the Tata Trusts’ decision not to renew his trusteeship before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner. “I have been made aware of the recent reportage surrounding my trusteeship in the Tata Trusts… I believe this letter should assist in putting the quietus on speculative news reports that do not serve the interest of the Tata Trusts and are inimical to its vision,” he wrote.

A senior executive with the M Pallonji Group, which operates across logistics and shipping, Mehli Mistry served on the executive committee of Tata Trusts, which carries out extensive charity work in healthcare, education, and rural development.

“Privilege to Serve” and Tribute to Ratan Tata

Calling it a “privilege to serve as a Trustee till October 28, 2025,” Mistry said the position was an “honour bestowed upon me by Ratan Tata.” “In discharging my duties towards the Tata Trusts, I have been guided by his vision of ethical governance, quiet philanthropy and utmost integrity,” he noted. He added that his commitment to Ratan Tata’s ideals extended to ensuring that the Trusts are “not plunged into controversy,” warning that “precipitating matters would cause irreparable harm to the reputation of the Tata Trusts.”

Upholding the Spirit of Transparency and Integrity

Mistry further appealed for transparency and good governance within the Trusts, expressing hope that future decisions will align with Ratan Tata’s principles. “In the spirit of Mr Ratan N Tata, who always put public interest before his own, I hope that the actions of the other trustees going forward will be guided by the principles of transparency, good governance, and public interest,” he said. As he concluded his note, Mistry invoked Ratan Tata’s words, saying, “I part ways with a quote that Mr Ratan N Tata used to say to me – ‘Nobody is bigger than the institution it serves.'”
