Only One Week Until the South Australian Election: Premier Peter Malinauskas Apologises at the Leaders Debate

Narrow victory in the debate: In the Leaders Debate held today at the Adelaide Oval, the SA Press Club judges declared a narrow victory (38.25 points) for Premier Peter Malinauskas. Liberal leader Ashton Hurn received 36 points.

Shifting focus: Following setbacks regarding the ambulance ramping issue, the Labor Party has redirected its campaign towards housing and the cost of living.

Liberal Party to freeze salaries: Ashton Hurn has stepped forward with a new promise to freeze politicians’ salaries.

Election polls: Despite ongoing controversies, current polls indicate a landslide victory for the Labor Party in the election on March 21.

Adelaide: With only a handful of days remaining until the South Australian state election on March 21, the Leaders Debate has delivered a heavy blow to the ruling Labor Party. Premier Peter Malinauskas openly apologised on a public stage for failing to fulfil the Labor Party’s most important promise, which was central to their rise to power in 2022: to “completely end ambulance ramping”.

The Premier’s shocking admission came when Liberal Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn raised harsh criticisms during the debate, which was jointly organised today by the SA Press Club and the Business Chamber.

Arguments and Statistics from the Debate:

Malinauskas stated that the government has spent over a billion dollars (approximately 1,500 crore rupees) in the health sector, and has hired 600 new doctors and 1,400 nurses. However, he admitted that they were unable to reduce ramping times.

The current ramping time is higher than during the tenure of former Liberal Premier Steven Marshall (2,711 hours in March 2022).

In February 2026 alone, ambulances waited outside hospitals for 3,616 hours (an increase of 905 hours).
Ashton Hurn hit back, stating that this is a failure of governance and that this government is only interested in PR work and boosting its image.

Email Controversy Serves as a Blow:

Another issue that put the government on the defensive during the debate was the release of an incorrect email. An email released by the office of SA Health Minister Chris Picton, claimed to have been sent by a cancer patient praising the health department, actually belonged to another person. The opposition alleged that the government used the wrong email to cover up a complaint lodged by a housewife, Bronwyn Patterson, regarding her husband’s treatment. Malinauskas had to admit that this incident was “completely unacceptable”.

The Question Before South Australian Voters:

A lack of hospital beds and the collapse of the aged care sector are pointed out as the primary causes of ambulance ramping. Whether the public will once again trust the Labor Party, which broke its promise, or give a chance to the fresh face of Ashton Hurn, will be known on March 21.
