Severe Tropical Cyclone Mitchell Intensifies in WA; High Alert Issued

PERTH: Cyclone Mitchell, currently tracking towards the Pilbara coast in Western Australia, has reportedly intensified into a severe system. According to the latest update from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), the Category 3 cyclone is expected to make landfall between Exmouth and Onslow either tonight or early Monday morning.

Severe Weather Warning: Currently, wind speeds near the centre of the cyclone are averaging between 120 and 130 km/h. However, as the system approaches the coast, wind gusts could increase to between 170 and 195 km/h. This has the potential to cause significant structural damage. Areas including Barrow Island are already beginning to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Ports Closed: Following the cyclone warning, operations at major commercial ports in the Pilbara region—including Port Hedland, Dampier, and Ashburton—have been completely suspended. Vessels and small boats have been directed to move to safe anchorages.

Flood Threat: There is a risk of heavy rainfall and subsequent flash flooding in coastal areas. A ‘Flood Watch’ has been declared for the Pilbara and Gascoyne river catchments. Residents living between Cape Preston and Cape Cuvier are urged to exercise extreme caution.

The system is currently moving in a south-westerly direction. While the cyclone is expected to weaken after crossing the coast, the initial impact is assessed to be severe. Authorities have urged residents to have their emergency kits ready and to remain safely indoors or in shelters until official notifications confirm it is safe to come out.
